Role-Based Strategic Initiative

The Professional Role Development Strategic InitiativeTM

What is the Professional Role Development Program?

By inspiring registered nurses to strengthen their professional role competency, the Professional Role Development Program strengthens effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of care, which leads to improved outcomes for our patients, nurses, and the entire organization. This initiative is a major part of the Department of Nursing's Strategic Plan for the next five years and its alignment with UCLA Health System's Strategic Goals and the Magnet® Model components. The program was initiated to provide the vision for UCLA nurses to continue to be transformational, positioning UCLA nurses to actualize the eight recommendations offered in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.

A professional practice model (PPM) that is "exemplary" must be advanced over time. The purpose of the Professional Role Development Strategic Initiative is to strengthen RN professional role autonomy and decision-making authority, a component of UCLA's PPM, such that it is lived and experienced by all registered nurses at UCLA. The UCLA Department of Nursing has continued their relationship with Maria O'Rourke, RN, FAAN, FAAHC, a nationally known expert on the use of the professional role within an interdisciplinary team with special expertise in the use of the role of the professional registered nurse. Dr. O'Rourke was instrumental in re-writing the California Nursing Practice Act in 1974 and published the first paper on its implementation which served to guide the profession in the appropriate use of the professional RN.

Structures to ensure success of the initiative include:

  • Strategy Team of Key Stakeholders
  • Critical Mass Education Intervention
  • Professional Role-Based Manager Program
  • Professional Role-Based Coach Certification Program
  • Professional Role-Based Practice Coach Program Roll-Out
The UCLA Department of Nursing began implementation of The Professional Role Development Strategic InitiativeTM in 2011. The overarching purpose of this initiative is to further strengthen and inspire how the Model of the Professional RoleTM is lived in the organization by all registered nurses. UCLA Department of Nursing has continued their consultative relationship with Maria O'Rourke, RN, FAAN, FAAHC, a nationally known expert on the use of the professional role within an interdisciplinary team with special expertise in the use of the role of the registered nurse.
